Information on future rates of deforestation is needed to assist with projecting New Zealand’s likely emissions over the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, to provide needed information for future climate change negotiations and to inform future policy development. This study analyses the current and future deforestation intentions of exotic forest owners; assesses a sample group to obtain reliable estimates of national deforestation up to 2025; gauges future deforestation under different carbon price and policy scenarios; and provides commentary on uncertainty in intentions.
