Not seeing wallabies during a search doesn’t always mean they aren’t there. It may simply mean the method used wasn’t effective enough for the situation. Understanding how well different surveillance tools detect wallabies helps decide how much searching is needed to be confident an area is clear - and whether local elimination has been achieved. This research compared the detection effectiveness of several commonly used surveillance tools for detecting Bennett’s wallabies i.e. hunting dogs, night-time UAV surveys using thermal cameras, daytime helicopter surveys using thermal cameras, search dogs (non-hunting) looking for live wallabies and scat and ground visual surveys undertaken by people.
