In this MPI-funded project, AgResearch and Fonterra have collaborated to gather data on dairy manure and effluent management practices. Data from 8,454 farms was assessed for the 2022–23 season to inform improvements to methane estimates in New Zealand’s GHG inventory. The data indicated that around 34% of farms use off-paddock facilities, mainly feed pads. Cow use peaks in winter, with off-paddock facilities accounting for ~2.7% of annual cow hours, varying by region and island.
