The 2026 stock assessment of scampi (Metanephrops challengeri, a small deep-water lobster) on the Mernoo Bank (fishery area SCI 3) off New Zealand found the population to be in a healthy state. Current abundance was estimated at about two-thirds of the stock's original, unfished level; comfortably above the 40% management target used for this stock and well clear of the lower limits that would trigger concern.

The smaller neighbouring fishery, SCI 4A, also appears to be above target, but with much greater uncertainty because far less information is available; the combined trawl/photographic survey in 2024 provided the first reliable abundance data for this area.

Drawing on commercial catch and catch-rate records, trawl and photographic surveys, and two independent population models, the report concludes that current catch limits are likely to be sustainable over the next five years — provided the recent strong numbers of young scampi entering the fishery continue to occur rather than dropping back to the long-term average.
