This document presents a summary of recent literature on the ecological effects of aquaculture, to provide context for the 2026 update of the Overview of Ecological Effects of Aquaculture (the Overview), first published in 2013.

While the original scientific literature review has not been comprehensively revised, this update includes new information on changes in aquaculture policy, regulation, technology, monitoring and research relevant to understanding environmental effects in New Zealand. The document draws mainly on New Zealand studies where available and uses international research where local information is limited.
