Stump to Pump programme outcomes included:
- identification of technology to convert forestry waste to biofuels in New Zealand
- evaluation of economic returns of forest waste conversion to biofuels
- design of a modular biofuels test plant at the Norske Skog Tasman site
- definition of end-user products and path to market
- understanding of key risks for business and ways to control them
- demonstration that there are enough forest residues to support biofuel production in New Zealand.
Industry is funding further work on:
- forestry biofuel commercial viability
- ensuring biofuels meet specifications for intended markets and uses.

Background to the programme
Forestry industry growth opportunities are limited for traditional wood processing, and New Zealand isn't getting full value from its forests. We could be using our harvested wood and forestry waste better.
The Stump to Pump solution
Stump to Pump investigated how to get more value from forestry waste by converting it to liquid biofuels.
A feasibility study looked into the commercial viability of a biofuels business in New Zealand using radiata pine residues. The study assessed issues from source to end product, including:
- feedstock (forest waste) characteristics and availability
- design and viability of a test plant
- fuel distribution and logistics.
