He Taurikura Māori supports the collective growth of the Māori food and fibre sector. Our network of trusted relationships and capability to work with Māori as Treaty partners enables us to:
- provide a range of programmes tailored to the needs of Māori entities and agribusinesses.
- coordinate MPI’s relationships with Māori, including the delivery of Treaty settlement commitments.
- help facilitate new opportunities for Māori in the aquaculture sector.

He Taurikura Māori has programmes tailored to support Māori agribusiness, boost the value of Māori food and fibre exports, and improve environmental performance
Our Māori Agribusiness team administers five targeted funding programmes through a network of regional advisers.

Māori partnerships
He Taurikura Māori takes a lead role in MPI’s relationships with Treaty partners. We do this by:
- helping coordinate MPI’s iwi partnerships including attendance at relationship meetings
- monitoring over 700 Treaty settlement commitments for which MPI is responsible.
- working with Fisheries New Zealand to help to realise the potential of the aquaculture settlement.
- supporting iwi with due diligence to inform investment decisions

Ahuwhenua Trophy
As a platinum sponsor of the Ahuwhenua Trophy competition, MPI is proud to support the celebration of excellence in Māori farming and growing.
The Minister of Agriculture, Minister for Māori Development and Secretary for Māori Development are Trustees of the competition.
An Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer/Grower award is awarded each year too.
