Fish Spawning Indicator

Plantation forestry activities must be managed to avoid disturbance of river and lake beds, or wetlands, when fish are spawning. Use the Fish Spawning Indicator to assess the risk.

About the Fish Spawning Indicator

Any forestry activities that would disturb perennial (permanent) river or lake beds, or wetlands, when fish are spawning are not permitted without resource consent. Spawning periods vary depending on the fish species and its location, so we developed the Fish Spawning Indicator to help councils and foresters manage and plan forestry operations.

The tool will show where and when fish that are sensitive to disturbance are spawning. This will make it clear which forestry activities are permitted, and which ones will need consent (if permitted activity conditions are not met). It will be available by May 2018 when the National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry (NES-PF) regulations commence.

The database is available

While the tool won't be available until May 2018, the database for the tool is available now. The database provides information for the North and South islands only – not for New Zealand's offshore islands.

You can download then export the database in several formats (Shapefile, CSV, KML, Excel) by signing in to ArcGIS Online. If you don’t already have an ArcGIS account, you can create one for free.
