We have had no further detections of H5 bird flu [since 17 July 2026]. There is no evidence of any mass mortality in wildlife. There has been no detection in poultry.
We continue to have a strong response from the public about unwell or dead birds they have seen, and we are assessing these.
MPI experts are triaging public notifications based on internationally recognised processes for assessing H5 bird flu risk – so multiple unwell or dead birds, certain species (sea birds, waterfowl, birds that congregate in large groups), and certain locations will take priority. We can receive multiple notifications about the same bird.
Our testing is focused on tracking the movement of bird flu so we can help protect our poultry industry and support Department of Conservation (DOC)’s work with native wildlife.
Building a precise picture through our extensive continuing surveillance and testing will allow egg and chicken producers in different parts of the country to make good decisions about what biosecurity measures are best for them to protect their flocks and keep operating.
