Controlled Areas in Auckland region
Controlled Area Notices are in place in:
- the Waitākere Ranges on certain tracks
- parts of the Hūnua Ranges
- Goldie Bush Scenic Reserve.
Before you visit these areas, make sure you're familiar with the conditions of entry and what you need to do to help save our kauri.
Tiakina Kauri – protecting kauri trees
Biosecurity New Zealand is investing in key kauri protection activities through the Tiakina Kauri management agency. The agency does this in partnership with mana whenua and collaborating agencies.
A National Pest Management Plan is the strongest form of protection available under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to help protect kauri from the Phytophthora agathidicida (PA) pathogen. The National PA Pest Management Plan came into effect on 2 August 2022.
Ten rules were introduced as part of a national plan to help protect kauri from the PA pathogen. The rules affect people who:
- visit areas with kauri
- cultivate kauri trees
- have kauri trees on their land.

What is Phytophthora agathidicida?
Phytophthora agathidicida is a soil-borne pathogen that infects and kills kauri trees. It spreads via infected soil movement. That soil may be moved:
- on footwear and other clothing and gear
- on vehicles driven in affected areas
- by animals – including wild pigs, livestock, and pets.
Kauri trees can be infected for a long time before they show any signs of sickness. Ensuring the survival of kauri for future generations depends on all of us taking actions and doing everything we can to stop the PA pathogen from spreading.
A coordinated effort to protect and save kauri trees
Controlling the spread of the pathogen – regardless of who owns the land the trees are on – is critical to ensuring kauri are protected.
In partnership with mana whenua, Tiakina Kauri collaborates with regional councils and other agencies across kauri lands. Together we carry out PA surveillance, research and create tools to help protect kauri. This includes cleaning stations and signage to protect kauri. These are designed to help ensure visitors to kauri forests follow the appropriate hygiene steps to help prevent the spread of PA.
