(Formerly Statements of Intent)
This document sets out the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI’s) medium-term strategy and demonstrates how MPI plans to deliver the shifts in performance required to be an exemplary organisation over the next four years.
Strategic Intentions 2015–2020 builds on the previous Statement of Intent 2014–2019. It also sets out how MPI will deliver on government priorities, as well as cross-agency and primary sector initiatives.
Statements of Intent
This is the first Statement of Intent (SOI) for the new Ministry for Primary Industries. The SOI is one way through which we articulate and help the organisation to set its direction over the year ahead. It is a legal and public articulation of what we are going to be focusing on to help the primary industries to be successful.
Statement of Intent 2013-2018
The Statement of Intent (SOI) is a key element of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) public accountability narrative. At a high level it signals the benefit that MPI is seeking to achieve for the primary sector and for all New Zealanders. The SOI sets out key challenges and opportunities associated with MPI’s Export Double goal and details how these factors will shape MPI’s work programmes and capability development over the next five years.
The Statement of Intent (SOI) sets out what the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will do over the next five years to achieve its vision of Growing and Protecting New Zealand. SOI takes into account New Zealand’s dynamic trading environment and the Government’s goals of building a more productive and competitive economy, as well as delivering better public services.
Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries
Under normal circumstances, MPI would have released a new edition of the situation and outlook for primary industries (SOPI) report in June 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic means the situation changes on an almost daily basis. The outlook for our sectors is more uncertain than ever before so we decided to delay the release of our usual forecasting document. Instead, MPI has prepared a report on how COVID-19 has disrupted New Zealand's primary industry exports. This shows that, in general, primary sector exports are holding up well. This is primarily due to the New Zealand dollar weakening against the United States dollar.

This document summarises MPI’s achievements in addressing our gender pay gap to date and outlines the next steps we will take towards gender equity.
Our action plan explains how we’re using training to mitigate the impact of bias, improving the transparency of our remuneration systems and processes, and promoting an inclusive culture that enables gender balanced participation and recognition in the workplace.
Briefing for Incoming Ministers
This document is the Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI’s) overarching Briefing for Incoming Ministers (BIM). We provide you with a succinct overview of MPI’s current role and the work we do to grow and protect New Zealand.
The briefing was developed by the Ministry for Primary Industries and presented to Hon Louise Upston (Associate Minister for Primary Industries) on 20 December 2016. The briefing provides the incoming Minister with information on the capability needs in the primary sectors and MPI’s skill work programme, and policy and implementation issues.
