Managing the approval and registration of ACVM products

The registration and approval of agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines ensures that any risks to food safety, trade, animal welfare, plant safety, and biosecurity are managed. That’s why products like veterinary medicines, crop protection products, vertebrate toxic agents, animal feeds, fertilisers, and environmental inhibitors must be authorised under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997 and regulations. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) administers the act.

Reporting monthly on applications and approvals

All applications are carefully assessed while ensuring they are processed in a timely manner. We will be reporting monthly on the number and types of applications:

  • we have approved
  • that are in the process of being appraised
  • that are waiting appraisal.

ACVM product registration report for February 2026

This month, we approved 113 applications – 52 for agricultural chemicals and 61 for veterinary medicines. Of these:

  • 14 applications were for new products – 1 was for a new veterinary medicine product with a new active ingredient and 13 were new agricultural chemical products that are similar to existing registered products
  • 10 applications were for new uses or changes to use applications – 7 for agricultural chemicals and 3 for veterinary medicines. 

As of the end of February 2026, there were:

  • 124 applications in the queue to be appraised – 55 for agricultural chemicals and vertebrate toxic agents and 69 for veterinary medicines
  • 173 applications being appraised – 64 for agricultural chemicals and vertebrate toxic agents and 103 for veterinary medicines.
