Household goods and personal items
MPI charges for costs related to inspecting unaccompanied household goods and personal items brought into New Zealand by air or sea. MPI may bill you for these services, or you may be charged by your import or shipping agent.
Charges are based on the number of items that need inspecting:
- $38.88 for 1 item
- $77.74 for 2 to 4 items
- $155.50 for 5 to 12 items
- $202.15 for 13 to 20 items
- $241.03 for 21 to 28 items
- $279.89 for 29 to 36 items
- $38.88 for each set of items (up to 8 items) beyond 36 items.
Goods and mail levies
MPI also charges levies covering system-level costs such as data analysis to develop and monitor risk profiles, risk screening, intervention monitoring programmes, surveillance around ports, and auditing among other costs. Customs brokers, freight forwarders and craft operators pay the levies, and are likely to include the cost in what is charged to customers.
