UPDATE – 31 July 2026
Decision announced
Following this consultation, Fisheries New Zealand has imposed a temporary closure of fisheries waters at Karerekautuku near Moeraki to prohibit the taking of all shellfish.
The closure takes effect from 3 August 2026 until 2 August 2028.
The closure covers approximately 1.3 square kilometres and includes all the fisheries waters extending offshore for 500 metres from the mean high-water mark along a stretch of coast starting at a point near the northern end of the Moeraki Boulders/Kaihinaki Walk and running southwards along Moeraki Beach to the headland at the eastern edge of Onekakara Bay.
