Trial of digital labels
New Zealand Food Safety is planning a one‑year trial of digital food labels on selected imported packaged foods. We asked for your feedback about these plans in 2025. Submissions on that consultation closed on 19 December 2025.
Proposal to enable a limited trial of digital labelling on certain imported food products
About the trial
The limited trial of digital labelling will be enabled under section 343 of the Food Act 2014 for certain pre-packaged imported food products.
During the trial, approved stores will not have to put compliant New Zealand labelling information on the physical packaging of those foods. Instead, they must provide a compliant label digitally.
- The physical label on the package still has to follow the rules of the country it came from.
- All foods must still follow the Food Act 2014, the composition requirements under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, and any other laws.
- After the trial ends, the stores taking part will need to go back to having physical labels compliant with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
The aim of the trial would be to see whether it's feasible to shape a future compliance pathway for the use of digital labelling.
Expressions of interest sought from food retailers
We sought expressions of interest from food businesses to be in the trial. The preferred start date for the trial is between May and August 2026, however, we may consider applicants who have a later start date.
To be considered for the trial, you needed to:
- meet and agree to all eligibility criteria, requirements, and conditions for participation
- complete the application form
- be shortlisted.
The trial is limited to a maximum of 4 food businesses, with a maximum of 2 sites from each business permitted to participate.
