Making the Food Act system fairer, more efficient, and more responsive
The Food Act 2014 was introduced to ensure food safety requirements were based on the level of risk posed by different types of food businesses. Businesses with higher food safety risks were subject to more stringent requirements.
Since the Act came into effect, the food industry has evolved, and as more information has become available the risks associated with different sectors may have changed through the introduction of new technologies or have become better understood.
To keep pace, we need to make sure the rules remain adaptable, effective, and appropriate for all food businesses.
We're making changes based on your feedback
New Zealand Food Safety started work on the Food Act Improvement Programme (FAIP) following the introduction of the Food Business Levy in July 2025.
The programme is a comprehensive set of initiatives informed by food businesses, co-regulators (like councils), and verifiers, plus feedback from stakeholders to the Minister for Food Safety.
FAIP focuses on areas that matter most to food businesses, including:
- costs and requirements for registration, renewal, and verification
- better tools and support for food businesses.
Our goal is to make the Food Act system fairer, more efficient, and responsive to the needs of the food sector. On this web page, you can read more about some of the work we're doing or download our A3 infographic for an overview of the programme.
