MPI Trade Certification replaces AP E-cert

From Monday 17 August, MPI Trade Certification replaces AP E-cert for most animal product export certification processes.

You will still need to use AP E-cert temporarily for some processes. These include non-consignment requests such as for premises or product registration.

What is an animal products export certificate?

Some overseas markets require an ‘official assurance’ from the New Zealand Government that your product meets specified standards and requirements. For animal products, MPI provides this in the form of an export certificate.

Do you need an export certificate?

Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMAR) documents set out the requirements for exporting animal products. Requirements vary between markets.

If your export destination has an OMAR, you'll likely need an export certificate. You'll need this before you can send your product.

OMARs are password protected. You need to apply to MPI to read them.

The export certificate is the New Zealand Government's assurance to the destination market that your product meets the standards set out in the OMAR.

If the OMAR doesn’t mention your product, check with your importer or importing agent about what you need to do.

How to get an animal products export certificate

To get an export certificate, your consignment must meet the requirements as stated in the relevant OMAR and the Official Assurance Requirements Notice.

You can request a certificate directly using MPI Trade Certification. This online system replaces AP E-cert for animal product export certificates from 17 August 2026.

How to use MPI Trade Certification

MPI Trade Certification is also the system used to track the movement history of animal products within New Zealand.

Whenever products move between premises information must be entered correctly in MPI Trade Certification.

Transfer documents when MPI Trade Certification is not available

Use this document in one of the following circumstances:

  • when approved for a particular product
  • when MPI Trade Certification is unavailable and MPI has approved the emergency use of paper documents.
