Who can request footage from on-board fishing cameras?
If your vessel is part of the on-board cameras programme, you can request access to footage recorded during your fishing operations. We have a process to handle these requests while protecting everyone's privacy and commercial interests.
You may be eligible to request footage if you are:
- the vessel owner, operator, or permit holder
- the vessel skipper
- a crew member who appears in the footage.
Some requests may be declined or have restrictions
Before you make a request, be aware that some restrictions may apply.
- Eligibility checks: We review each request to ensure you qualify to access the footage. This protects the privacy of everyone who may appear in the footage and safeguards commercially sensitive information.
- Permission requirements: You may need written permission from other people who appear in the footage you're requesting, including other crew members. This is a legal requirement under privacy legislation.
- Volume limitations: Large requests (more than 12 hours of footage) may need to be refined to a more specific timeframe to make the process manageable for both you and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
- Investigation restrictions: We cannot release footage that is currently part of a compliance investigation or other legal proceedings.

Follow these steps to request footage from an on-board fishing vessel camera:
- Gather any required permissions: Obtain written consent from others who may appear in the footage.
- Be specific: Clearly identify the dates, times, and fishing activities you need footage for. You'll need to specify these in the request form.
